INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT AFTER SEMINAR 2: Search for a visionary person that has affected or affects your perspective to sustainable development.

The visionary person I found is prime minister of Bhutan and Bhutan government. With a population of barely 700,000 between two of the most populated countries on earth, China and India, the mountainous landlocked Kingdom of Bhutan has been hailed as one of the greenest countries on Earth. 72 percent of area of Bhutan is under forest cover. Constitution demands that a minimum of 60 percent of Bhutan's total land shall remain under forest cover for all time. All the conservation area are connected with the green path so that the animals in the area can move freely in the entire area. This makes Bhutan stand out as one the very few biodiversity hot spots in the world. They are providing free electricity to rural farmers. With free electricity, they will no longer have to use firewood to cook their food. Even though the country's economy is small with a gross GDP of less than 2 billion dollars, Bhutan boasts both free education and free healthcare facilities for its citizens. Recent figures show that the country emits around 1.5 million tonnes of carbon annually, while its forests absorb over 6 million tonnes. This tiny underdeveloped nation is not just surviving- it is thriving. In Paris convention, Bhutan reiterated their promise to remain carbon neutral for all time to come.

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT AFTER SEMINAR 3:Find good examples of sustainability education

Sustainability and Education

Education makes the people aware of environment and nature. I was more surprised when I found that in Western Australia there is a non-profit organization and they have the project called Little Green Steps that supports Education for Sustainability in the childcare centers, kindergarten, preschool where children are aged between 0-8 years. These centers have various environmental plan like how to recycle and reuse the material, how to use water efficiently in daily use, how to make compost bin, use the light only when needed otherwise turn it off, etc. The main purpose is that these little young kids while at home also being aware of saving energy, picking up the rubbish and recycling which ultimately inspire their parents. In Little Green Steps, they are ensuring that all children who come through children's centers are learning great habits from an early age. The ideas of sustainability will be instilled in them and they'll help to spread the word to their friends and family. Learning these practices from an early age will ensure that as the children grow, they'll make responsible decisions about what they do and how it affects the environment.
