Task 1

  1. Exploring the roles of ICT in supporting sustainability practices -

FIrst paper focuses on how ICT could enable the transition to a more sustainable business and economy by considering the possible impacts of ICT in different domains. Authors define Sustainability for organizations as inclusion of Triple Bottom Line(TBL), in place of traditional profits. This includes Social, Economic and Environmental dimensions. After this they define the roles of ICT as Automation, Infrastructure, Informating and Transformation. They propose different practices that might be enhanced with the use of ICT by businesses. In order to validate their point they present a case study of Genius Corporation, a semiconductor manufacturing company. They describe how the concrete example of ICT system - industrial IoT of company helps it to improve its manufacturing, logistics and data centres with TBL in mind.

  1. Green IT Readiness: A Framework and Preliminary Proof of Concept -

Second paper proposes a framework for systematic approach towards greener practices in IT management. The authors define it in terms of five attributes: Attitude, Practice, Policy, Technology and Governance. Their proposed system attempts to modify the behaviour of companies during all stages of interaction with IT systems: design, operation and disposal. The name of the platform is G-readiness, as authors describe it in terms of how ready the businesses are for providing the services and goods to their customers in an environment friendly way. In order to demonstrate the proof of concept they analysed 4 companies and conducted a series of surveys among IT and management personal.

Third paper gives an overview of the current trends and research in both Green ICT and usage of technology for promotion of Sustainability. Authors define three directions that have emerged in industry and academic research to this end. They are Green IT/ICT, Environmental Informatics and Sustainable Human-Computer Interactions (SHCI). They describe various trends that argue necessity of sustainable development such as recorded and projected resource consumption. They also argue that the usual approach of increasing technical efficiency is not enough as it leads to even higher consumption of resources. What should be done is the combination of factual limitations, what they term as sufficiency with efficiency of technology in order to achieve sustainability goals.
