Article 1: Implementation of Green ICT for Sustainable Economic Development

This paper introduce the concept of green economy or sustainable economy, which is a framework for restoring economic growth meanwhile responding to the climate change and other subjects of environmental sustainability. It also demonstrate how the use of ICT can bring the green and sustainable economy and how ICT provide an opportunity for a sustainable and inclusive future by revolutionizing business models and behavior, by making management of energy distribution and transportation more efficient, by enabling new ways of working, learning, e-health and providing public services, and by helping countries adapt to climate change and reducing disaster risk.

Article 2: Gaming for Citizen Science

Citizen Science is a term used to describe research collaborations where members of the public are recruited to assist with scientific investigations. Citizen science project will not only help scientist to tackle the environmental problems but also raise awareness of citizen themselves as well as encourage them to change their behavior and thought. This paper describe how the gamification concept implemented on web application has been used to actively engage people in citizen science project.

This video show the master-planned project of South Korea in cooperation with Cisco, sumsung etc to build the world's smartest and greenest city. Sungdo is the entirely new smart city from scratch in South Korea. 80% of its funding is earmarked for green technology and it is the second city in the world to have all of its major buildings on a par or below the levels set by the green energy certification, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

Songdo has been designed with sensors to monitor temperature, energy use and traffic flow. These sensors can alert to personal when bus is due and to local authority about any problem. A lot of these innovations are designed with the environment in mind - charging stations for electric cars, for example, or a water-recycling system that prevents clean drinking water being used to flush office toilets.The waste disposal system is also impressive because there are no rubbish trucks trawling the streets or vast bins dotted around blocks of flats. Instead, all household waste is sucked directly from individual kitchens through a vast underground network of tunnels, to waste processing centres, where it's automatically sorted, deodorised and treated to be kinder to the environment. In future, some of this household waste will be used to produce renewable energy.

4 EXAM QUESTIONS

1. How do you define sustainability in your own word?

It is important to learn to what extend people understand about the sustainability concept and what it means to them. Some people may define it based on economic, social or environmental dimension depended on their background.

2. Technology facilitates people's decision or desire to change. However, how technology can trigger the change inside people or make people want to change ?

In the chapter IT and personal change, the book mainly talk about how technology support people in changing behaviour. It seem like technology is used just as a tool to support. What if people themselves don’t have intention to change at all? Can technology make people change their mindset?

3. Should environmental learning be injected to formal or informal education to get more effective result? Why?

This question is to access people’s opinion on how do they think where they can learn the most about environment. It’s important to know whether traditional or formal education in class and the study through interest group or workshop will reach more people to concern about environment.

4. Should developed countries and developing countries have the same responsibility on the sustainability? Why or why not?

This is quite an opinion based question. However, it’s interesting to know how people from developing or developed countries think of the sustainability, how their countries should be responsible of the environmental issues or how much their countries have been doing for sustainability so far.
