Articles relevant to Green IT:

Article 1

“Green IT Trends: How the Computer Industry Is Saving Energy”: http://www.wfs.org/blogs/len-rosen/green-it-trends-how-computer-industry-saving-energy

Article presents ideas to make computing and manufacture processes more environmentally sustainable. It gives ideas such as usage of new materials (ex. graphene), locating databases in places, where outside air can be used to reduce the energy spent on cooling the equipment or making strategies, such as upgrading equipment for reuse, which can be more efficient than recycling.

Article 2

“Explaining Green Computing”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=350Rb2sOc3U

Video presenting impact of computing on the environment, examples of solutions to reduce energy and resources consumption .

Article 3

“Energy-aware Internet routing coming soon”: http://www.cnet.com/news/energy-aware-internet-routing-coming-soon/

Article shows idea of algorithm, created by MIT researchers, which manages cost and usage of electricity in huge companies. Algorithm focuses on routing Internet traffic to data centers, where electricity is less expensive and more “eco-friendly” strategies can be developed. At the end it shows another example of use of sensors and other modernizations used to balance the usage of energy.

Individual task after the first seminar

My personal “sustainability movement”, besides implementation of well-known forms of recycling and resources saving, would depend on increasing public awareness in this topic. Creation of new applications or technologies in sustainability has no meaning, until we realize the weight of the subject to the public. Using today's technology we can in easy way create websites, blogs or facebook pages, where we can share interesting ideas concerning this topic, or create our own articles. Moreover, we can try to offer lectures in schools or universities, to influence people from the earliest years of their lives.

Finally, we can create social movements, which could propose laws similar to those presented in this video:

Simple, specific example would be to create act, which would ensure 60% of the country's afforestation. Even if this act would not be accepted by the government, collecting signatures and cooperation with media could change the way of thinking in society.
